Professor of future studies at Tartu University, General Martin Herem, is conducting a lecture series titled "Comprehensive National Defense and Estonia's Future". The lecture held on September 17 was titled "How to Prepare for War?". Herem spoke about Ukraine's experiences and showed that society can adapt well to crises.
Herem said that fear often stems from lack of knowledge. When a person sees a threat but doesn't know the solutions, fear arises. If the threat is described and solutions are offered, people start thinking that everything isn't so bad.
Martin Herem emphasized that the foundation of national defense is a functioning civil society. During a crisis, the state needs both electricians and teachers. Everyone must continue their daily work to keep the country strong.
Herem also said that long waiting times before a potential attack wear down people's nerves and drain the state coffers. He explained that if the state calls reservists into the forest, economic activity stops.
Herem mentioned that corruption is a major threat to small states. He said that a country can become dependent on a "gray zone" if corruption spreads.
Herem stressed that 21st-century war is a matter of mathematics. He said that the success of war is determined by how many enemies the army can eliminate.
He added that diplomacy and sanctions provide only moral support. At critical moments, only military strength matters.
Herem advised that the state should invest more in mathematical calculations and clear defense plans. He said that citizens need to be able to assess risks and let go of illusions.
