Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said on Sunday that Estonia plans to participate in a NATO exercise in Greenland.
Pevkur said that Estonia's position has not changed. He stated that Estonia is ready to participate in the exercise. Pevkur believes that linking participation in exercises with economic issues is not reasonable.
Pevkur noted that NATO ally exercises are routine. He said that Estonia is taking the opportunity to participate in exercises in the northern region.
Estonia has not yet sent troops to the exercise, but planning has begun. Pevkur said that the first planning meeting took place on Friday and the next ones will take place next week.
Pevkur said that Latvia has expressed a desire to be involved in the planning. He added that Estonia may send one liaison officer to Greenland.
According to Pevkur, it is still very difficult to say how many Estonians will go to the exercise. Previously, it has been mentioned that five to ten military personnel might be involved.
US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose higher tariffs on several European countries. Trump said that this is related to the exercise in Greenland.
Trump said that the tariffs will take effect on June 1, 2026. He added that the tariffs will remain in effect until Greenland is purchased.
Trump believes that Denmark cannot protect Greenland from Russia and China. He said that many countries are in Greenland without a clear reason.
