Soode ja muude märgalade taastamise plaaniga tuleb korraks aeg maha võtta
A Pause is Needed in the Wetland Restoration Plan
Energeetika- ja keskkonnaminister Andres Sutt ütles, et soode taastamise plaaniga tuleb paus teha. Peale ülevaatust ja kohalikega suhtlemist otsustatakse, kuidas edasi liikuda.
Minister of Energy and Environment Andres Sutt said that a pause is needed in the wetland restoration plan. After a review and communication with locals, it will be decided how to proceed.
The wetland restoration plan will be put on pause. Minister Andres Sutt said that time is needed to review and communicate with locals. In every interaction with nature, diversity and biodiversity are important. Additionally, clear communication with the local community is essential.
For example, in the Kikepera Nature Reserve in Pärnu County, there is a plan to restore 3,100 hectares of wetlands. Local residents and the Saarde municipality do not agree with this plan. They fear that the roads will no longer be passable and that the risk of flooding in the area will increase. The municipality also does not want to flood the forest.
Minister Sutt said that the Kikepera project is still undecided. Taking time is necessary to get a clear overview and make the right decisions. Previously, over 23,000 hectares of wetlands and swamp forests have already been restored in Estonia.
Regarding the locals' fears, Mart Kiis said that they are unfounded. He emphasized that no forest dieback has been observed and there is no need to fear floods. Kiis added that wetlands have been restored on state lands for over 15 years and there has not been such strong opposition in Estonia before.
Kiis noted that they have always been ready to compromise to find the best solution for the region. Currently, over 23,000 hectares of wetlands and swamp forests have been restored in Estonia.
