Isamaa chairman Urmas Reinsalu says the coalition pressured President Alar Karis. President Karis will not run for a second term.
Reinsalu wrote on social media that there was a discussion in the morning. The president thanked Isamaa for their support. Reinsalu praised the president for considering running again for a long time.
Reinsalu said the presidential election was deadlocked. On February 26, no party ruled out Alar Karis. However, this was just a smokescreen to buy time.
President Karis was pressured over the past six months. At first, it was hidden, but later it became public. Eesti 200 announced its opposition. The prime minister withdrew support.
Reinsalu said the government parties did not support Karis. They wanted a president who supports their views. This is not a solution to the crisis of trust.
Reinsalu believes that pressuring Karis was wrong. The crisis of trust has now deepened. The government parties may be satisfied, but Estonian society has lost.
Isamaa is discussing further steps. Reinsalu calls on citizens to express their opinions. Estonia needs a new president who assesses the situation honestly and fulfills their role impartially.
