Tiit Land ja Tarmo Soomere soovivad saada Tallinna Tehnikaülikooli uueks rektoriks. Mõlemal on tugev taust ja visioonid ülikooli tulevikuks.
Tiit Land and Tarmo Soomere wish to become the new rector of Tallinn University of Technology. Both have a strong background and vision for the future of the university.
Tiit Land (60) is a biochemist. He was the rector of Tallinn University from 2011 to 2020. Since 2020, he has been the rector of Tallinn University of Technology. He mentioned that he still has unfinished work with his team.
Tarmo Soomere (67) is a marine scientist and professor. He was the president of the Estonian Academy of Sciences from 2014 to 2024. He said that Tallinn University of Technology has developed well, but there is still a need for better scientific work.
Tiit Land emphasized that he wants to do more work to educate engineers and scientists. He aims to create new research groups and increase the number of students. He also wants better cooperation with companies.
Tarmo Soomere believes that the university is not doing enough world-changing science. This affects graduates and the country's ability to compete. He wants the university to focus more on Estonia's socio-economic problems.
The new rector will start work in the new academic year. This time, the rector's term is four years. This is done so that the rector and council elections do not overlap in the future.
In the coming weeks, the candidates will introduce themselves and their visions. The Senate of the University of Technology will give its position on April 29. The rector will be elected by an 11-member council on May 9.
A person who is or has been a university professor can run for rector. They must have a doctoral degree or an equivalent degree. The candidate must be supported by at least one member of the council.
