A new history room has been opened in Rakvere Castle. It features 23 bronze bowls found in Rahkla. These bowls are very old, approximately 800 years, and are well-preserved.
Particular attention is given to eight Hanseatic bowls. Archaeologist Ain Mäesalu says there is no other museum in the world with so many such bowls on display. All the details can be seen clearly.
The bowls were found during searches at the Rakvere battlefield site. The searchers hope these findings will give people reasons to think about the importance of searching. Detectorist Dmitri Šutov says this is very important.
The oldest find in Rakvere Castle is a pottery shard from the 5th or 6th century. Curator Tõnno Jonuks says he likes the fact that there is no precise information about some of the items. For example, the bronze knife sheath is very interesting.
The head of research for Virumaa Museums, Inge Laurik-Teder, says the history room is part of a larger project. Their goal is to make Rakvere Castle a better museum.
The renovation of the history room cost 60,000 euros. It was done with the help of the heritage protection board and the cultural capital.
