The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Estonia's ambassador to Georgia, Marge Mardisalu-Kahar, will end her work in Tbilisi on March 10. Until the arrival of the new ambassador, the embassy will be led by temporary chargé d'affaires Gita Kalmet.
Mardisalu-Kahar will continue her work as ambassador to Armenia. Estonia will open an embassy in Armenia in March, and Mardisalu-Kahar will become the first Estonian ambassador in Yerevan. The government decided to open the embassy in November 2023.
Estonia and Georgia opened embassies in each other's countries in 2006 and 2007. Currently, Georgia does not have an ambassador in Estonia.
Relations between Estonia and Georgia have worsened following the coup in Georgia. Pro-European politicians have been removed from power, and the government is suppressing protests. Relations with Armenia, however, are better. Armenia is moving closer to the European Union and has started peace talks with Azerbaijan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that relations between Estonia and Armenia are good and stable. Since 2023, there have been many meetings at the level of state leaders.
Regarding relations with Georgia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that Estonia has supported Georgia, but now relations are worse. Georgia does not meet the European Union's requirements, and Estonia no longer supports the Georgian government. Estonia, however, supports Georgia's territorial integrity and assists civil society.
