The Riigikogu has passed a new emergency and national defense law. This law allows restricting the media during wartime. Until now, only the prime minister and some ministers could do this. Now, the government, police, and defense forces can also impose such restrictions.
The Media Union is not satisfied with this. They see a serious problem in it. They believe that this law makes it easy to abuse press restrictions.
There were many discussions about the law. Some members supported it, while others disagreed. Urmas Reinsalu, the chairman of Isamaa, argued that the law makes things more confusing.
The Media Union now wants to talk to the President and the Chancellor of Justice. They want to ensure the preservation of freedom of information. They hope that this law will not harm democracy. The Media Union continues to fight for press freedom.
