In his anniversary speech, President Alar Karis spoke about Estonia's foreign policy and population decline. He emphasized that people should feel secure and that loneliness must be overcome. Karis noted that young people suffer the most and that we have created a life where the ability to be together is lacking.
Karis also pointed out the fact that every year, fifty people lose their lives in Estonia's winter cold. He noted that this shows our indifference and carelessness. These deaths are the most tragic aspect of our way of life.
The President emphasized that Estonia must make decisions that are understandable and transparent. He called on politicians not to divide society for short-term gain. Karis questioned whether debate is even possible and stressed that we all have the right to our own opinions.
He criticized the hunger for opinions and the culture of discussion, which is too sharp and defamatory. Karis noted that this leads to silence and indifference. He suggested that we make pauses for calm both at work and at home.
Finally, Karis asked how to preserve and protect Estonia's freedom, justice, and culture. He answered that the only way is through education. Karis believes that Estonia's future begins in school and that we must together create a wiser and more caring society.
Karis said that Estonia's story is not just one of survival, but also of striving and freedom. He believes that the future depends on our choices and that we must keep it in our hands.
