Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna visited Kyiv on February 5th and 6th. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Foreign Minister Andrii Sibiha. They discussed how to increase pressure on Russia. They agreed that only strong pressure and isolation can help achieve peace.
Tsahkna stated that Estonia firmly supports Ukraine. Ukraine must remain independent and sovereign. Estonia’s foreign policy is unchangeable – supporting Ukraine is essential. Russia aims to destroy Ukraine and alter Europe’s security. Therefore, Russia must be pressured and isolated. Only this way can fair peace be achieved.
Estonia provides military aid to Ukraine. This amounts to 0.25% of Estonia’s GDP annually. Estonia also supports NATO’s military aid initiatives. Estonia leads the work of the Nordic and Baltic countries (NB8). Supporting Ukraine is important for them.
Tsahkna also spoke about Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. He wants Ukraine to utilize the large EU loan (90 billion euros). Work is also underway on security guarantees.
The foreign ministers also discussed the Schengen area. They want to prevent Russian soldiers from entering the Schengen zone. These soldiers are a threat to Europe.
Tsahkna mentioned that Estonia will help Ukraine with the energy crisis. Russia is attacking Ukraine’s energy system. Estonia provides humanitarian and energy aid. This will help Ukrainians survive the winter.
In Kyiv, an Estonian-funded crisis center was opened. It assists people who lack warmth and electricity at home. Two more such centers will open in the near future.
Estonia also assists in Ukraine’s reconstruction. In 2027, a Ukraine reconstruction conference will be held in Tallinn. Estonia is also working in Zhytomyr Oblast. A shelter and a social center have already been established there.
