The leaders of the Center Party and Isamaa, Mihhail Kõlvart and Urmas Reinsalu, want to decide whether to support Ülle Madis for president. They want to hear her decision and discuss other possible candidates.
Urmas Reinsalu said that the parliamentary board of elders should first meet and discuss candidates. He mentioned that some parties have proposed Ülle Madis's name, although Madis herself has not said she wants to run. Reinsalu said that Isamaa does not rule out supporting Madis but wants a broader discussion first.
Reinsalu said that coalition parties are afraid to talk about presidential candidates. He wants all parties to openly discuss their candidates and their positions in more detail.
Mihhail Kõlvart said that Ülle Madis should clearly state whether she wants to run. He said that the president is not appointed but elected. Kõlvart believes that the candidate should say themselves whether they are ready.
Kõlvart said that there are currently several possible candidates. He does not see Ülle Madis among them. He wants the parties to choose a candidate soon who genuinely wants to become president.
Riigikogu speaker Lauri Hussar called a meeting of the board of elders on August 11 to discuss the presidential elections. Candidates can be nominated starting from August 21. The first round of elections is on September 2.
