Former Minister of Education Mailis Reps and the Ministry of Education and Research (HTM) have not yet agreed on how Reps will pay the amount ordered by the court. HTM is currently calculating how much money they will still demand from Reps.
HTM's sworn attorney Marko Kairjak said that Reps' representatives have made a proposal for a payment schedule. However, HTM has not yet responded to this, as they are calculating the total claim they have against Reps. This also includes claims that were not addressed in the court ruling.
If no agreement is reached, HTM will turn to the bailiff. Then the bailiff will collect the money on behalf of the state. At the end of September, the Supreme Court declined to take up the appeals, and the decisions of the circuit court became final. The Ministry of Education initially demanded nearly €119,000 from Reps, but the court ordered €30,548 to be paid. In addition, €11,892 in delay compensation must be paid. This amount will continue to grow until Reps has paid the money.
The circuit court also ordered Reps to pay €46,426 in legal costs. The Harju County Court found Mailis Reps guilty of embezzlement and fraud on September 27, 2024. The Tallinn Circuit Court modified Reps' sentence on June 4, 2024. Reps was sentenced to one year and five months in prison, which will be conditionally suspended for a probation period of two years.
