Hussar announced that the Riigikogu discussed the date of the presidential election and will use an extended format of the Council of Elders.
Hussar said that each faction can send two members to the extended Council of Elders meeting. The goal is to find a common candidate.
Hussar added that these meetings will take place on February 26th. He also mentioned the need to discuss how to involve so-called independent members of the Riigikogu.
Currently, the law on presidential elections is being reviewed. Hussar believed that it is too late to change the size of the electoral body, but it could be changed for future elections.
Riigikogu Vice President Arvo Aller said that he does not have much faith in finding a common candidate. He believes that parties will nominate their own candidates.
Chairman of the Reform Party faction Õnne Pillak said that the Riigikogu took a step towards a common candidate. She said that a common candidate would be ideal, but an electoral college would also be suitable.
Pillak added that the next president should be competent in foreign and security policy. She noted that the current president Alar Karis has been balanced.
