Martin Herem spoke in the program "Vikerhommik" about how Ukrainians strive to live a normal life during the war. He recently visited Ukraine and saw how people on the frontlines try to continue living.
Herem said that Ukrainians care even for stray animals. Every unit has a kitten that they take care of. In Kherson, grass is mowed despite the high threat of drones. Parks must be beautiful, but mowing the grass also helps avoid fire hazards.
A maternity hospital operates just three kilometers from the front line. During the occupation, 73 children were born there. The building is damaged, but medical work continues in the basement.
Waste is being sorted. In Kherson and Kramatorsk, people bring their garbage to bins. Recyclables are sorted separately. In Kherson, a school and kindergarten have reopened. Children study remotely but gather together on playgrounds.
Herem said that Ukrainians will not agree to peace on Russia's terms. They want peace on their own terms. Many people do not want to give up their territory.
Herem also spoke about Western countries. According to him, Ukrainians have hope that the West will help them. They are grateful for the assistance, but some promises remain unfulfilled. Finally, Herem said that Ukrainians believe in themselves and their strength.
