The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications announced on Friday that three potential areas in Viru-Nigula municipality remain under consideration for the construction of a nuclear power plant: Madala, Malla, and Letipea. Locations in Lüganuse municipality were ruled out.
Project manager Agnes Lihtsa explained that the locations in Lüganuse municipality were excluded due to security considerations. She said the decision is based on information received from the Ministry of Defence.
Lihtsa stated that substantive work will now begin. She mentioned that the starting positions have been confirmed and analyses will be conducted based on them. The first alternatives for locations are planned to be ready by the beginning of the new year.
Lihtsa noted that time shifts are common in the planning process. Refining and updating the methodology took a couple of months.
The government initiated a special national plan for a 600 MW nuclear power plant and its infrastructure in May 2025.
