Maris Lauri is becoming the president's economic advisor. She has been a member of parliament and also a minister. She said that politics has emotionally exhausted her.
Why did you decide to leave politics? Did you not see a future for the Reform Party? The president offered me a good job. I have been in politics for 12 years. The last few years have been very exhausting. I want to do something else that I have done before. I am not moving far from politics.
What result do you hope to see for the Reform Party? The elections are still far away. Everything can change quickly. We have a strong team and good ideas. Estonia needs a liberal party. Many people want this. All parties should be represented.
Are you talking about taxes? Crises have made people restless. Crises have been happening all over the world. Governments have made tough decisions. Often they have not been well explained. In coalitions, compromises have to be made. Sometimes the biggest blame falls on the Reform Party.
Is it being explained better now? I have not heard direct accusations. Parties have different opinions. They argue and discuss. This is normal. Not everyone can always agree.
What is your biggest achievement in politics? One important change is marriage equality. It was debated for a very long time. Now everyone is satisfied. Another important thing is the Monitoring Center for Development. This center helps analyze Estonia's future.
What advice do you give to the Reform Party? In elections, one should think about Estonia's better future. Handouts do not bring votes. People understand this. The Reform Party must help weaker people.
How can you help the president? The president must provide explanations on economic topics. I can help them understand and explain. The president must be able to talk to different people.
