Work continues in Pärnu on Saturday to repair damage from Friday's flooding. The hardest hit areas are the beach and Rääma district.
According to Pärnu City Government, rescue operations continue. The Rescue Board is pumping water from flooded areas into the Pärnu River. By morning, water levels in Rääma have dropped by 25 cm. It may seem small, but it helps many people. Hundreds of houses that had water inside yesterday are now dry. People can now assess the damage.
But the danger isn't over yet. Rescuers have arrived in Pärnu from many cities, including Tallinn, Rapla and Haapsalu. The Rescue Association is also helping. Crisis Committee head Sander Kilk says such massive work hasn't been done in Pärnu for a long time. He thanks all helpers.
Õuna, Männi, Raba and Rääma streets are closed. Buses are taking alternate routes. The city government asks drivers to be careful.
The city government recommends following Rescue Board guidelines. If water enters a building, electricity should be turned off. Do not approach flooded electrical equipment. Lift items off the ground that could be damaged by water (such as chemicals).
On Friday, Pärnu received heavy rainfall. The rain overloaded the sewer system. There was over 100 mm, in some places over 120 mm of rain. This caused flooding in the city.
