The president of the Estonian Olympic Committee, Kersti Kaljulaid, discusses the importance of preventing mistreatment in sports and creating a safe environment.
Kersti Kaljulaid said in the program "Otse uudistemajast" that mistreatment of athletes is unacceptable. She spoke about how this problem is not only related to sports but to the entire society. Kaljulaid said: "When a person is born, they do not come with fists. If they are respected, they will grow into a good person."
Kaljulaid also commented on the Peep Pahv case. She said that Pahv can now continue his work calmly. The Estonian Basketball Association has already shown where Pahv went wrong. Kaljulaid hopes that Pahv will do better in the future.
Kaljulaid also spoke about Russian-language insults at sports events. She said: "When we use Russian words, it’s as if we haven’t emerged from the Soviet Union."
The Estonian Olympic Committee and the Estonian Anti-Doping and Sports Ethics Foundation launched the campaign "Words have power". Its goal is to reduce violence and create a safe environment. Kaljulaid said that the campaign is aimed at everyone, not just children.
Kaljulaid also spoke about Aivar Pohlak, who wants to become the president of the Estonian Football Association again. She said that every candidate should be discussed, but she cannot predict who will win.
