Architecture students from the Estonian Academy of Arts built a new shelter in Annelinn, Tartu. Its name is "Earlier". 17 students constructed it in 10 days. The project author is Jako Julius Schmid.
The shelter is inspired by old buildings. These buildings are no longer in use, but they have no new purpose. Usually, ruins in the city are off-putting. But in Annelinn, it has become a cozy place where people can gather. Locals have quickly embraced it.
The shelter will remain on the lawn for five years. Currently, only local sheep are there. But in the future, people will be able to spend more time there.
A large part of the materials are recycled. For example, the bricks have been used somewhere before, as builder Karmen Viilup mentioned.
This is the first shelter made of bricks. Landscape design was also used. Residents of Annelinn wanted more greenery. Therefore, the students added landscaping to make it natural.
Shelters are popular in Tartu. They provide people with an opportunity to gather. This also helps strengthen the community.
