The US has decided to halt the rotation of a brigade in Europe. This brigade has been stationed in several NATO countries.
Romania's Ministry of Defense stated that this decision is expected. Around 1,000 US soldiers will however remain in Romania.
The ministry added that NATO has strengthened its presence on the eastern flank. This allows the US to adjust its military presence.
Romanian Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu said that the brigade has units in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Slovakia.
A NATO official said that the US and NATO are in close contact regarding troop deployment. The official added that changes to US troop presence are not unusual.
President Trump has called on European allies to take more responsibility for their security. The US wants to focus on protecting its borders and the Indo-Pacific region.
Trump said in September that the US may increase its troops in Poland. Poland's Defense Minister said they have not received information about troop reductions.
Italy's Defense Minister said that the process of shifting the US focus began during President Obama's time. He added that the US is concerned about competition from China and Europe needs to ensure its defense.
Romanian Defense Minister Mosteanu emphasized that Romania's ties with the US are strong. He said that Romania is safe.
Mosteanu added that Romania still has many allied troops. These include forces from the US, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, and North Macedonia.
The minister also said that Romania has received an advanced air defense system from the US. This increases the country's capability to defend against drones.
