The leaders of parliamentary parties do not support the idea of a 40 km/h speed limit in Estonian settlements. They discussed this in a debate on Vikerraadio.
Maris Lauri said that different modes of transportation should be possible. She mentioned that accidents decreased in Tallinn when a 40 km/h limit was introduced on major streets. She thought that 40 km/h is reasonable in the city center, but on some streets the limit could be 30 or 50 km/h. Each municipality can decide for itself.
Urmas Reinsalu does not believe that the speed limit should be the same everywhere. He thought that in some cases the discussion is more ideological. He does not support the idea of making driving inconvenient. Regarding safety, the municipality can decide for itself.
Martin Helme said that EKRE wants to increase the speed limit. He wishes that the speed on Paldiski road and Pirita road could be increased to 70 km/h again. He believed that electric scooters and mopeds are to blame for traffic accidents. He recommends regulating them.
Lauri Läänemets believed that safety can be improved if public transport is better. This reduces the number of cars and speeds. The speed limit should be location-based.
Mihhail Kõlvart said that the issue of speed limits can be resolved by specialists. They can calculate what speed is optimal for each street.
Aleksei Jašin stated that traffic safety is not an ideological issue. He wants to build streets in such a way that they are safe to drive on. He mentioned that the police have reduced the speed limit on Liivalaia and the number of accidents has decreased.
