Estonia and Germany are among Ukraine's largest supporters. Germany's Patriot air defense systems have helped strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities. Estonia provides Ukraine with at least 0.25% of its GDP annually, this year even over 0.3%.
Michal stressed that Germany's role is crucial in the security of the Baltic Sea region. Germany's contribution as a NATO framework nation in Lithuania and NATO operations is appreciated. He hopes for Germany's support in EU discussions to strengthen the defense of the eastern border.
Germany is Estonia's largest partner in defense procurements. Michal expressed hope that cooperation will expand both in assisting Ukraine and in strengthening Europe's defense readiness. Estonia's defense industry is rapidly developing. Estonia has launched a €100 million fund for military technologies. He invited German companies to utilize this fund.
Economic cooperation was one of the central topics of the meeting. Germany is Estonia's fourth-largest trade partner. Opportunities are seen in digitalization, artificial intelligence, energy, and green technology. Michal said that both Germany and Estonia are investing in each other's countries.
Near Leipzig, a factory of the Estonian company Skeleton will open, representing a €220 million investment. Michal emphasized that the cooperation between German industry and Estonia's digital education is exemplary in Europe. In the evening, Michal will meet with German investors at the Estonian embassy who wish to cooperate with Estonia.
