RMK will distribute 80,000 free spruce seedlings at the Iisaku nursery on Friday. If there are seedlings left, they will also be distributed on Saturday. RMK has over 2.7 million seedlings this year. Whether all seedlings will be distributed for free will be clear by autumn.
You can come to the Iisaku nursery on Friday at 10 AM and take spruce seedlings. RMK is not asking for money. If anyone wants to pay for the seedlings, they can donate to a charity. RMK board chairman Mikk Marran said that the first part of the seedlings will be used during the spring planting season. Information about other nurseries will be provided in the autumn.
The Iisaku nursery will close in early July. Seedlings cannot be grown there anymore. The seedlings are packed into bags, and people can take them. The spring planting season has ended, which is why the seedlings are being distributed for free. In autumn, seedlings from other nurseries may also be distributed.
RMK has over 2.71 million seedlings this year. This is because logging volumes have recently decreased. The seedlings were planted in 2021 and 2022. Every year, seedlings that do not meet quality standards are composted.
RMK and the Ministry of Climate are trying to find a solution that would comply with the law. RMK does not plan to distribute so many seedlings for free every year. In the coming years, there will not be as many surpluses.
RMK monitors how young trees grow. If necessary, additional planting is done. Trees are also planted on non-forest land. However, many seedlings still remain.
RMK is distributing free seedlings that are not intended for resale. It is hoped that the seedlings will be used on private forest land or for establishing hedges. RMK and the Ministry of Climate have found a solution that is fair and economical. 15,000 seedlings will go to Ukraine in the autumn to create a test area.
