On Tuesday, the cargo ship Baltic Spirit was detained. The ship was brought to Muuga Harbor. No narcotics were found on the ship. The vessel left the harbor late Tuesday night.
Vitali Zajarin, head of the investigation department of the Tax and Customs Board (MTA), said that this time no information confirmed by international partners was found.
A few days ago, the MTA received a report that there might be a suspicious container on the Baltic Spirit. The container could contain narcotics. The ship was headed to St. Petersburg, Russia.
The last port visited by the ship was Puerto Bolívar in Ecuador. Partners monitored the ship’s route. It was decided to verify the information.
The suspicious container was hidden in a sea container. The ship was detained and sent to Muuga Harbor for inspection. MTA employees removed the suspicious containers from the ship. Customs control was also conducted on the cargo.
The ship left Muuga Harbor at 2:15 a.m.
The MTA’s task is to combat cross-border crime. It also prevents the smuggling of narcotics. In 2022, 2.5 tons of cocaine were found. It was hidden in banana crates shipped from Ecuador.
