Liisa Oviir says that supervision is important in politics. If there is no supervision over electoral alliances or associations, it is unequal treatment.
The ERJK has shortcomings in both resources and legislative power. More resources are needed because the workload is very high. A draft of the Political Parties Act, which would help the ERJK work better, is being processed in the Riigikogu.
Electoral alliances are a complex topic. They are listed in the law as associations, which Oviir considers too vague. The Ministry of Justice suggested that electoral alliances could be non-profit organizations, but politicians do not agree with this.
Allowing electoral alliances into politics was a good goal: to bring power closer to the people. But now the question is when the activities of an electoral alliance end. Is it at the end of the elections or when they start exercising power in local government. If electoral alliances start exercising power, they should provide the same reports as political parties.
Oviir says that it is important to monitor the use of money in politics. If this is not done for electoral alliances or associations, it is unequal.
Currently, it seems that many politicians violate the Political Parties Act. But Oviir says that in reality, only a very small part does so. In Estonia, people are very smart and look for various opportunities.
Oviir works in the local council of Harku municipality. She does not plan to return to politics at the national level. She is satisfied with her work as a legal advisor.
