On Monday, the chairman of the Social Democrats, Lauri Läänemets, said that the Reform Party asked them to nominate Riina Kionka as a presidential candidate.
Riina Kionka, however, said that no party has discussed running for president with her.
The chairman of the Reform Party, Kristen Michal, rejected Läänemets' claims. Michal said that the Reform Party supports President Alar Karis but is ready to support other candidates as well.
Michal added that the former president Toomas Hendrik Ilves has spoken about Riina Kionka as a possible candidate.
Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi said that Läänemets is spreading rumors. Ligi was surprised that Läänemets does not know who Riina Kionka is.
Ligi added that Riina Kionka is a very good diplomat and her candidacy would be very strong.
A member of the Reform Party, Kristo Enn Vaga, said that Läänemets owes an apology to Riina Kionka, the foreign service, and the public.
Vaga said that history will write about Lauri Läänemets as smaller than Riina Kionka.
The chairman of the Center Party, Mihhail Kõlvart, said that the process of electing the president should be dignified.
Kõlvart added that Lauri Läänemets and the Reform Party have gotten involved in political games that are not very fair.
The chairman of Isamaa, Urmas Reinsalu, said that it is time for the Reform Party to abandon political games.
Reinsalu added that President Alar Karis has gained great trust in society.
A member of the Social Democrats, Raimond Kaljulaid, said that it is currently impossible to predict who will become the next president of Estonia.
Kaljulaid added that a good leader should gain trust from others, not just from the supporters of their party.
