The Supreme Court said that Lääneranna municipality made the decision to close schools incorrectly. The municipal government did not sufficiently listen to parents and school employees.
The future mayor Tarvi Sits (Isamaa) says that their plans are similar to the Supreme Court's decision. As a first step, six classes will be restored in Virtsu school. Currently, there are only four classes there.
Sits said that closing schools was easy, but now it is difficult to reopen them. The new municipal government agrees that Virtsu school must get six classes back.
Also, the renting of Metsküla school premises will be terminated. This school now operates as a private school. Sits believes that renting out the premises was a wrong decision.
Discussions about Virtsu school continue. Some want to start from the fifth grade, others from the sixth. Parents say that a school with six grades is better.
In 2023, the municipality decided to close several schools. The Supreme Court now said that this decision was wrong. The decision affects Koonga, Metsküla, and Virtsu schools.
