From July 1st, the state will refund the registration fee for vehicles sold abroad. The refunded amount has now exceeded 1.2 million euros.
The right to refund the registration fee arises only if the vehicle has been paid for and the vehicle is deregistered from the traffic register. The vehicle must be in use outside of Estonia.
Currently, over 1,217,000 euros have been refunded for 1,279 vehicles. Approximately 100,000 euros for 101 vehicles are awaiting applications. Upon submission of the application, the fee will be refunded.
The registration fee can be applied for refund through the Transport Administration's e-service. This can be done by the last owner of the vehicle.
The application along with bank account details can be submitted within 60 days after the vehicle is deregistered from the traffic register. If the application is not submitted within 60 days, the fee cannot be refunded later.
The registration fee is refunded if less than ten years have passed since the vehicle's first registration.
The refundable amount is the same as it was on the day the vehicle was deregistered. The amount is calculated based on the registration fee rates that were in effect at the time of payment.
If the vehicle is deregistered before one year has passed since registration, the base part of the registration fee will not be refunded.
Registration fees less than 300 euros are not refunded.
The registration fee rates and calculations are outlined in the Traffic Act. The rate depends on the vehicle's carbon emissions and mass. The rate also includes a base part of 150 euros.
