The main honey harvest of bees has ended earlier this year. This happened due to the cool and rainy summer. The honey yield is smaller than usual.
Beekeeping is studied at the Olustvere Service and Agricultural School. Students work with educational apiaries. Kaili Retsnik is a beekeeping student. She has been keeping bees for five years. According to her honey yield, this year is special but not bad.
Kaili says: "The weather was different this year. Only rain. Now it's hot, which should end. I am happy about the farmer who sowed a lot of honey plants. My bees bring a lot of honey."
Valmar Lutsar is a beekeeping teacher in Olustvere. He says there is no need to complain about the honey yield. He adds: "The main harvest has ended. Here and there something is still blooming, but the season is ending."
Valmar also talks about the specifics of the honey yield: "This year has been rainy. The honey yield depends on the region and the bees. In Olustvere, the honey yield is considered good. We also use sown honey plants."
Valmar adds that when the harvest is over, it is necessary to start varroa treatment and supplementary feeding. In Olustvere, this will start around August 15.
