US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke last week about the desire to send an international military contingent to Gaza.
According to Rubio, the US may seek UN approval for the troops.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said that preliminary discussions have taken place on the topic. Pevkur stated that it is too early to take a position before the US proposal.
Pevkur added that peace in Gaza is necessary, as it is in Ukraine.
A more detailed discussion can only begin after the US presents its plan.
Pevkur emphasized that sending troops would require parliamentary debate.
Chairman of the Riigikogu National Defense Committee Kalev Stoicescu said that the situation in Gaza is still too raw. Stoicescu noted that Hamas is not disarmed.
Stoicescu explained that UN peacekeeping requires a stable situation. He said that if violence continues, the situation will be difficult.
In Stoicescu's opinion, an international military presence is necessary, but a peacekeeping mission is not yet possible.
Estonia recently completed its mission in Iraq and previously participated in the operation in Mali.
