Estonia and Sweden made a new agreement. The Estonian parliament will approve the agreement on June 10. President Alar Karis will announce the agreement.
The first prisoners will come to Tartu in August. By the end of the year, there could be up to 200 prisoners in Tartu. Next year, there could be up to 600.
The current Tartu prisoners will be transferred to another prison. Renovations will be carried out in Tartu Prison.
The Prison Service is requesting 300 new employees. Employees must speak Estonian. They must be Estonian citizens. The salary starts at 2400 euros per month.
Sweden will pay Estonia for the prisoners. Sweden will pay 30.6 million euros per year. In the first year, Sweden will pay 23 million euros.
Tartu Prison will remain. Sweden has closed many prisons and they don't have enough space.
If the agreement is terminated, Estonia must give a year's notice. Tartu Prison will remain in use.
