The Presidents of Estonia and Latvia will open the new Estonian embassy building in Riga on Wednesday. The building is located in the Old Town and has been renovated. The first floor of the building will be open to the public.
The building was constructed 45 years ago as a computing center. The Estonian state purchased the building over five years ago. After the renovation, only the beams and some partitions remained. Everything else is new. The renovation project was carried out by United Riga Architects. The interior design was conceived by Kadri Tamme's studio. The building features Estonian elements everywhere, from the materials to the furniture. The building also houses the winning artwork 'Branches and Roots' from the Naalesak Art competition. Nine people work at the embassy. Four of them speak Estonian and Latvian. Two people understand both languages.
The Estonian Ambassador to Latvia, Eerik Marmei, said: 'Estonia's relations with Latvia are very important. Latvia is our closest ally in NATO and an important trading partner. The new embassy in Riga will strengthen our relations.'
The new Estonian embassy is located in a symbolic place in Riga. Nearby are the Latvian Presidential Palace and Riga Cathedral. The new embassy building cost 7.6 million euros. 2 million euros came from the recovery and resilience fund. 4.6 million euros were covered by the sale of the old building.
Marmei said: 'This building is constructed based on the needs of the embassy. It is representative and secure. The embassy offers good opportunities for diplomats and citizens. The first floor is a public area where city residents and tourists can familiarize themselves with Estonia's offerings.'
Estonia has been looking for a suitable building for the embassy in Riga for an entire century. Until now, finding a suitable building has been unsuccessful.
