A study conducted last year showed that Estonian youth are using artificial intelligence more. It is no longer used only for learning but also for communication.
According to the study, children and young people use the internet more than before. The internet is very important to them, especially for doing schoolwork. However, increased internet use also brings risks, such as harmful content.
The use of artificial intelligence is more popular among young people. 83% of 15-16-year-olds have tried it. Even 9-11-year-old children use AI surprisingly often.
Young people do not use AI only for schoolwork. Some talk to AI as if it were a friend or even with love. This is a new trend that was not seen before in Estonia.
Some young people create a virtual companion with AI. They talk to it every day. This may not necessarily be bad, but some may develop problems with real relationships.
There are also dangers in using AI. Internationally, AI is often used to create harmful images. This is not yet widely seen in Estonia, but caution is needed.
Girls use AI more than boys. Perhaps because they talk more or do more schoolwork.
Some young people use AI as a learning aid. Others use it simply to get work done quickly. Schools do not have clear rules on how to use AI.
Many young people do not know enough about the dangers of AI. They do not think about privacy or other risks. Schools should talk more about how to use AI wisely.
Schools do not have uniform rules regarding AI use. Each teacher decides for themselves. This creates confusion among young people. Young people would like to be more involved in decision-making.
