Reemo Voltri said that teachers will organize a warning strike next Tuesday. The strike is the last resort to show the need to raise teachers' salaries.
According to Voltri, the negotiations have not been successful. Teachers believe that words are not enough. They want the government to listen to them. The strike is taking place because the state budget is still being drafted. The government has indicated that there will be no salary increase.
The strike notice period is three days, and it will last for one hour. In kindergartens, the strike will take place between 8–9 AM, and in schools between 9–10 AM.
Schools will decide themselves what happens to students during the strike. Strikers cannot change the school's schedule. If the majority of teachers strike, it is necessary to consider whether it is safe for children to be present. The school may decide to open later.
Jüri Käosaar, the director of Tallinn's Gustav Adolf Gymnasium, said that they do not yet know how the strike will take place. Students will likely come to school at 10:01 AM, and classes will start at the same time.
According to Voltri, defending the country is important, but the use of money must be transparent. If education is neglected, it could pose a threat to internal security. Qualified teachers are necessary.
The Education Workers' Union hopes that the government will heed the strike and that longer protest actions will not be necessary.
