A large piece of sandstone collapsed on the bank of the Ahja River near Suur Taevaskoda. This happened a few days ago. Now, ancient rock layers approximately 400 million years old are visible there.
There have been smaller collapses there before. However, eight years ago, there was a major collapse. The Ahja River erodes the rocky banks, causing both small and large rocks to fall from them.
Professor Alar Rosentau says that there are caves in the Taevaskoja outcrop. These were formed by groundwater. Water has eroded holes and caves into the rock.
The collapsed rock had old names written on it by people. These are now gone. Village mayor Ahti Bleive mentions that the rock wall is now clean and beautiful. There are layers of various colors – from yellow to bluish-purple.
