Urmas Paet told ERR that Europe's biggest security problem is its dependence on the USA. He believes that the European Union should take steps to strengthen defense cooperation between countries.
What needs to be done to ensure Europe's security? Paet proposes four steps. First, the presence of military personnel from other countries in Greenland and the Arctic should remain permanent. Second, the European Union should be open to Greenland, Iceland, and Norway. Third, defense cooperation between European countries should be strengthened. Fourth, the European Union should demonstrate itself as a strong and reliable partner elsewhere in the world.
Paet also talks about internal strengthening. He says that the European Union previously created geographical battle groups, such as the Nordic Battlegroup, in which Estonia also participated. Now the same model should be used again: different countries should cooperate on a geographical basis.
Should Europe also protect itself from the USA? Paet believes that the current situation between the USA and Europe will improve, but it is clear that dependence on the USA must be reduced.
Can the USA take over Greenland? Paet says that no one can say it is impossible. The US President has threatened countries that support Denmark and Greenland.
Will the trade agreement between the USA and Europe come into force? If the US President threatens European countries, the parliament cannot approve the agreement.
Can Europe impose tariffs on US products? If the US takes hostile steps, Europe must respond in kind.
Should Estonian soldiers participate in exercises in Greenland? Paet says that if a member state of the European Union needs help, it should be provided.
