The Ministry of Education wants to share curricula with Open AI. They do not plan to share textbook content. Riin Saadjärv, the head of educational technology at the ministry, said this to ERR.
Saadjärv said that a final agreement has not yet been reached. But they hope to achieve it soon. They are also open to other AI providers. It is important that the AI meets the needs of students.
The curricula are public. Everyone can read them. But the content of textbooks is under copyright. Therefore, it is not shared with AI. If they wanted to do so, they would have to talk to the authors of the textbooks.
AI can help students learn better. For example, it can be useful in individual work. AI does not provide answers but helps students think. It asks questions and provides feedback.
The ministry provides rules for AI. AI must not provide answers. It must use only materials entered by teachers. The teacher controls which materials the AI uses.
Minister of Education Kristina Kallas said that the AI pilot program will start in September. In 2025, all Estonian high schools will receive a new application. It speaks Estonian and helps with learning.
