Valdeko is a 66-year-old father. His son Tanel is 27 years old and has a genetic disorder. Tanel cannot speak or walk. He always needs care.
Tanel was diagnosed at the age of 17. Little is known about the specific genetic disorder, and no cure has been found. Tanel only looks and smiles. His face is happy when someone talks to him. Being alone is very difficult for Tanel.
Tanel also has an older brother who helps the family. Four years ago, Valdeko's wife Tiina passed away. Valdeko was left alone with Tanel. But one social worker helped them. Thanks to her, Tanel can spend weekdays at the Käopesa family home. They provide care for children and adults with disabilities.
Valdeko works in construction to earn extra money. Financial shortage is a big problem. In winter, a lot of money is spent on heating. Tanel also needs new clothes and diapers. Additionally, money is spent on medications. Tanel has epilepsy.
Valdeko's pension is 756 euros. Tanel receives a bit more money, but it's not enough. The car tax is a heavy burden. In addition, bureaucracy is a hassle. Valdeko has to file reports and prove Tanel's disability.
Valdeko's health is poor. He moved out of an apartment building because he had to carry Tanel up and down the stairs constantly. Valdeko's back and knees are damaged. He is waiting for a second knee replacement.
Valdeko cannot imagine placing Tanel in a care home. He says Tanel is his child and he cannot do that. Valdeko wishes people would not forget such families. Visiting and supporting them is very important.
