The Climate Ministry wants to change the law. The amendment would allow drivers to work more during a crisis. This would help goods, such as medicine or fuel, to reach their destination.
Priit Tuuna, an employee of the Climate Ministry, spoke to ERR. He said that Estonia has not had any crises in recent years. During crises, it may be necessary to change working hour rules.
During a crisis, drivers may have longer working days. There may also be shorter rest periods. This increases fatigue and the risk on the roads. However, the ministry believes it is necessary.
Goods must reach people. Therefore, it is important that drivers have the opportunity to work more. The employer must ensure that the driver does not become too fatigued.
Kersten Kattai, head of the Estonian Road Transport Association, said that drivers must be careful during a crisis. However, the risk should not be too great. Drivers and employers have a clear mind.
