The government is talking about taxes on online casinos. The goal is to get more money for the state. But so far, this has not happened.
Prime Minister Kristen Michal said that the government must consider whether to reduce taxes further. He said: "We need to discuss whether this is a good idea."
The tax on online casinos dropped from 8% to 4%. This change is part of the law that the parliament passed. The goal is to attract more casinos to Estonia.
Currently, however, the state is not getting more money. Instead, the state is receiving less money. Therefore, the government must reconsider.
Michal said it is difficult to say whether casinos will come to Estonia. He wants to understand why less tax is being collected. "If the money doesn’t come, there is no point in reducing taxes further," he said.
Some people do not believe that reducing taxes will help. For example, former Finance Minister Mart Võrklaev said that it will not help people. Others were also skeptical.
The Ministry of Finance believes that the state will lose money. Between 2026-2029, the loss will be 6-13 million euros. In addition, there was an error in the law that would have given casinos a tax exemption.
