The state will begin consolidating central IT services under one agency. First, the Information System Authority (RIA) and the State IT Center (RIT) will be merged. Later, the State Communication Foundation (RIKS) will also be integrated. Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs Liisa Pakosta says this is necessary to enhance security and save money.
The coalition agreement states that government IT services must be unified. Now, this plan will be implemented. Pakosta said the country needs better protection against cyber threats. Money must also be used more wisely. Therefore, government agencies will be merged under unified cybersecurity.
The government has approved the plans. First, RIA and RIT will be merged. This will happen on January 1, 2025. Subsequently, other IT services will be gradually integrated. The entire process will last until 2029. RIKS will be merged with RIA by July 1, 2029, at the latest.
RIA will oversee the use of artificial intelligence in government services. This will improve security and efficiency. RIA will also take on a larger role in managing the state's IT systems.
Pakosta says unified cybersecurity is stronger. When all government agencies work together, money can be used more effectively. A shared defense system is more efficient.
The merger of agencies will not result in significant layoffs. IT specialists are needed to create new systems. However, staff will be reduced by about 50 people over three years. Money will also be saved in other ways.
The government will discuss further implementation of the plans on July 9.
