Russia often conducts provocations against NATO countries. This is part of Russia's strategy. These provocations are used to show Western countries that they should take care of themselves rather than help Ukraine. This was stated by Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur.
Pevkur said that Russia wants NATO countries to help Ukraine less. Russia wants us to focus on our own countries. This is one of Russia's strategies.
Pevkur said that NATO must continue its work. This means using NATO's Article 4 and consulting with allies.
Pevkur said that on Friday, NATO demonstrated how effectively it works. If there is a need to use force, there is readiness for that. We also know that together with our allies, we can protect Estonia's airspace.
The Defense Minister added that Estonia's needs are now being reviewed with NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Allies are also discussing what more can be done on NATO's eastern flank.
Pevkur said that consultations with allies have already taken place. Estonia's activities, such as drone defense and strengthening air surveillance, will continue.
Leo Kunnas, a member of the National Defense Committee, said that it should be considered whether Estonia could have an air defense mission instead of NATO's air policing mission.
Pevkur said that this requires taking into account different rules. He said it is important to know who gives the order to use force.
On Friday morning, three Russian fighter jets entered Estonian airspace without permission. The planes were in Estonian airspace for nearly 12 minutes.
