The wall at Miina Härma Gymnasium collapsed a few weeks ago. This part of the building was constructed in 1960. Now the city must decide whether to rebuild the wall or modify the building more significantly.
Martin Bek, Tartu deputy mayor, says they are waiting for experts' opinions. Perhaps the building's foundation will need strengthening. Maybe they will expand part of the building or add a basement.
The school director, Ene Tannberg, says the school needs more space. There are many students at the school. Currently, the cafeteria is small, and there is no elevator. The new building should be larger and better.
Initially, the city planned six million euros for the renovation. But now the renovation will be more expensive because the wall collapsed. Exactly how much more is not yet known. Funds will be taken from other sources, not from the renovation budgets of other schools.
The city also wants to renovate Veeriku School. This plan remains unchanged. The city is now awaiting experts' reports and will then decide what to do.
