Currently, nearly 27,000 people with dementia live in Estonia. In an aging society, this is a major problem. Dementia affects both the patient and their loved ones.
Relatives need help to get rest. They have to provide care and often also work. They have no time to rest. They can't afford a day off.
Many municipalities offer little help. For example, food and firewood are delivered, but there is no assistance with taking medication. Patients are often recommended nursing homes, even though they could live at home. Nursing homes don't want people with severe dementia.
Access to help depends on where a person lives. There are more services in cities. It's harder to get help in rural areas.
According to the study, a unified system is needed. The system should help both patients and their families. Families should be assisted by a specific person who would assess the need for help.
The Ministry of Social Affairs is planning changes. New solutions are expected in two years. These would help people with dementia cope at home.
Today, people can get help from dementia competence centers. There they can receive advice and assistance.
