From July 1st, the police rule will change. Previously, a fine was sent if the speed exceeded the limit by more than 3 km/h. Now fines will only be sent if the speed exceeds the limit by more than 6 km/h.
The police say this change will help reduce excessive fines. Many fines result from drivers' minor mistakes, not intentional speeding.
Speeding is dangerous. It can cause accidents. The police primarily monitor speed, drunk driving, and activities that interfere with driving.
The change only affects the police's mobile speed cameras. There are 8 such cameras in Estonia. Previously, fines were sent for speeding starting from 3 km/h above the limit. Now the threshold is 6 km/h.
The police send about 300,000 fines per year. Two-thirds of these fines are issued by mobile cameras.
