PTA learned that sheep were illegally slaughtered in Aseriaru village, Viru-Nigula parish, Lääne-Viru County. The lamb meat was planned to be sold to Muslim buyers.
PTA officials found 24 skinned lamb carcasses and two unskinned lamb bodies on the property. There were also 14 unmarked sheep. PTA sent four officials to the site where the slaughter took place.
"We acted quickly because there was no permit for slaughter," said Olev Kalda, head of the PTA Animal Health Department. The police and border guard also came to assist.
"The slaughter took place in very unsanitary conditions. We ordered the owner of the sheep to stop the slaughter," said Kalda. The owner said the sheep were slaughtered for Muslim buyers.
Slaughter for religious reasons is permitted only for members of a religious association. For this, a PTA permit is required. The slaughter must take place in a special location where hygiene and animal welfare requirements are met.
The slaughtered sheep and offal were deemed unfit for human consumption. They were sent for disposal. PTA continues to investigate the case.
