KRA Director General Anu Rannaveski said that the health of conscripts is poor. "There is not much to praise," she said.
About half of the conscripts meet the health requirements. One quarter are automatically unfit. For the last quarter, it is decided whether to give them a deferment or not.
Half of those who do not meet the health requirements have mental and behavioral disorders. For example, anxiety or depression.
People with milder disorders are taken into military service. They are supported by social workers and psychologists.
The biggest concern is the health of young men and reservists. Only one third of the young people complete the physical tests.
KRA updates the health requirements almost every year. The health requirements are based on the ability of a person to cope in everyday life.
In 2026, there will be a break in military service. During this time, only 1200 young people will be recruited instead of the usual 4000.
The recruitment process for military service is changing. Previously, recruits were taken in January, July, and October. Now only in winter and summer.
The Ministry of Defense wants to change the dates of recruitment for military service. This would better suit students. Military service would begin in the second half of February and mid-August.
