The European Commission has initiated proceedings against Estonia. Estonia is not complying with an EU directive. The directive helps workers. For example, workers must know their salary and working hours.
The directive prohibits bad behavior. For instance, it bans job offers with excessively short notice. The Commission has also started proceedings against other countries, such as the Czech Republic and Finland.
The Commission will send a letter to Estonia. The letter will explain what Estonia is doing wrong. Estonia must respond within two months. If Estonia does not respond, the matter may go to court. Estonia could face a fine.
Estonia has partially implemented the directive. For example, employers must inform job applicants about the salary before the interview. Employees can publicly discuss their salaries.
However, Estonia is not fully complying with the directive. The government believes some requirements are too burdensome, especially for small businesses. Estonia has requested a postponement of the directive. The government has not yet commented.
