African swine fever was found in a large pig farm in Estonia. It is an infectious disease. The disease was detected from the blood tests of one pig. Now, nearly 28,500 pigs must be culled.
The Agricultural Board announced that the disease was found on two farms. One farm has 27,000 pigs. All of them must be culled. The infected pigs were bluish and had bleeding.
This farm provides 45% of Estonia's pork production. The spread of the disease is a major problem. It affects our food security.
The farm owner said that the culling is very bad. It will halt pig farming for a long time. The disease has also been detected on other farms.
The last time the same disease was found was on August 14 in Viljandi County. This year, over 54,650 pigs have been infected. Wild boars are also infected.
