Tourists in Tallinn usually only visit the old town. But Mustamäe is also a very interesting place. It was built 60 years ago. At the time, it was a modern place to live.
Mustamäe is full of historic buildings. For example, there are buildings of the Technical University. There are also sculptures and mosaics. Karin Paulus recommends taking a walk and having coffee there.
The walls of Mustamäe's apartment buildings feature beautiful paintings. Unfortunately, some of them have already disappeared. Everything was close by in the district: schools, shops, pubs. This aligns with today's 15-minute city concept.
The plans for Mustamäe were ambitious. There were supposed to be a cinema and a shopping center. But these were never realized. Only the name of the trolleybus stop reminds us of these plans.
Mustamäe's neighborhood shops are special. For example, the ABC 8 shop was built considering the landscape. The ABC 5 shop has an open courtyard. These are interesting architectural examples.
Mustamäe has been home to famous people. For example, the writer Mati Unt and the artist Mare Vint. Their houses could become memorial sites.
Mustamäe also has Estonia's first underground parking lot. There is also a new Lutheran church. It fits well with the district.
